AUGUST EVENTS

23 - Oak Savanna Workday. Join in the restoration of an area of the Mississippi River Gorge nearf 36th St. and W. River Parkway. 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Carolyn Carr of Ecological Strategies will train volunteers to carry out the tasks associated with this restoration, including controlling exotic species, maintaining existing plantings, and collecting desirable native seed. SEPTEMBER EVENTS

10 - Explore the Geology of Minnehaha Falls, 3:00pm to 5pm. Join the Friends of the Mississippi River and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board on a guided hike through Minnehaha Park. Metro State University Professor Randy Strobel will lead the hike and focus on the rich geologic features and fascinating plant life along bluff-top trails past the falls and to the confluence at the Mississippi River. 15 - Forever Wild 2006, a multimedia celebration of America's wilderness, featuring Walkin' Jim Stoltz, a most unique folksinger, photographer, and backcountry traveler. 7:30 pm. St Joan of Arc Church, 46th St and 3rd Ave, Minneapolis. Jim Stoltz, known far and wide as Walkin’ Jim, is a long distance wilderness hiker who has walked more than 26,000 miles through the backcountry of North America. This year is the 20th anniversary of Jim’s ‘taking his show on the road’, and he is making it special.  Forever Wild – 2006 is a marathon 50-state tour.  His Minnesota show is a free show and is open to the public. 16 - Envision Minnesota, a citizen convention and gubernatorial debate in St. Cloud. 8am - 1 pm, St Cloud State University The goal of Envision Minnesota is to elevate issues of growth, energy, and conservation in the political and policy dialogue in the state and to create momentum for action. This non-partisan effort aims to educate candidates running for state office in Minnesota , opinion leaders, and citizens on the important connections between rapid growth, and the future of our economy and our communities.
